1. Vehicle Lift

1.

Raise the vehicle on a lift, and make sure it is securely supported.


2. Rack Guide

Loosen the locknut (A) using the locknut wrench.



2.

Remove the locknut (A), the rack guide screw (B), the spring (C), the disc washer (D), and the rack guide (E).


3.

Remove the O-ring (F) from the rack guide.


4.

Wipe the grease off the sliding surface of the rack guide.

Apply multipurpose grease to a new O-ring (A), then install it to the rack guide.


2.

Apply multipurpose grease to the sliding surface and the circumference of the rack guide (B), and install it onto the gearbox housing.


3.

Wipe the grease off the threaded section of the gearbox housing.


4.

Install the disc washer (C) onto the gearbox housing.


NOTE: Disc washer is directional, install it as shown.


5.

Apply steering grease to the ends of the spring (D) on both sides.


6.

Install the spring onto the gearbox housing.


7.

Loosely install the rack guide screw (E) on the steering gearbox.


8.

Loosely install the locknut (F).


2. Steering Rack Guide Adjustment


1.

Set the front wheels in the straight ahead position.


2.

Loosen the locknut (A) with the locknut wrench.


3.

Remove the rack guide screw (B).


4.

Remove the old sealant from the rack guide screw.

5.

Tighten the rack guide screw (A) to 25 N·m (2.5 kgf·m, 18 lbf·ft), then loosen it.


6.

Retighten the rack guide screw to 7.9 N·m (0.81 kgf·m, 5.8 lbf·ft), then back it off to the specified angle.


NOTE: Refer the scale of locknut wrench (special tool).


Specified return angle:

173 °



7.

Put a mark (A) across the rack guide screw (B) and the gearbox housing (C). The mark position is arbitrary.


8.

Remove the rack guide screw.



9.

Apply new sealant (Three Bond 1215 or Loctite 5699) to the middle of the threads (A).


NOTE: If more than 5 minutes have passed after applying the sealant, remove the old sealant and residue, and reapply new sealant.


10.

Loosely install the rack guide screw on the steering gearbox.



11.

Tighten the rack guide screw (A) to about 7.9 N·m (0.81 kgf·m, 5.8 lbf·ft), then adjust the rack guide screw until the marks (B) align.


12.

Hold the rack guide screw stationary with a wrench, and tighten the locknut (C) by hand until it's fully seated.


13.

Install the locknut wrench on the locknut, and hold the rack guide screw stationary with a wrench. Tighten the locknut to the specified torque.


14.

Check for unusual steering effort through the complete turning range.


3. Steering Wheel Rotational Play Check

1.

Set the front wheels in the straight ahead position.

2.

Measure how far you can turn the steering wheel left and right without moving the front wheels.


If the play is within the limit, the steering gearbox and the steering linkage are OK.

If the play exceeds the limit, adjust the rack guide. If the play is still excessive after rack guide adjustment, inspect the steering linkage and the steering gearbox.


Rotational play:

0-10 mm (0-0.39 in)


4. Power Steering Assist Check

NOTE: This test should be done with original equipment tires and wheels at the correct tire pressure.


1.

Start the engine, and let it idle.



2.

Attach a commercially available spring scale (A) to the steering wheel. With the engine idling and the vehicle on a clean, dry floor, pull the scale as shown, and read it as soon as the tires begin to turn.


Initial turning load:

34 N (3.5 kgf, 7.6 lbf)


3.

If the scale reads no more than the specification, the power assist is OK. If it reads more, check these items:
