1. Vehicle Lift

1.

Raise the vehicle on a lift, and make sure it is securely supported.


2. Steering Joint Cover

1.

Remove the steering joint cover (A).


3. Footrest


1.

For some models: Remove the lower clip (A) from the stud bolt (B) with a 6 mm hex socket wrench.


2.

For some models: Remove the upper clip (C) from the stud bolt (D) with a flat-tip screwdriver, then remove the footrest (E).


4. Front Door Sill Trim - 4-Door


1.

Remove the cap (A).


2.

Remove the opener lock cylinder (B).


3.

Remove the screw (A).


4.

Remove the front door sill trim (A).


5. Kick Panel


1.

Pull out the front door opening seal (A) as needed.


2.

Remove the kick panel (B).


6. Air Cleaner Housing (Natural Gas Model)


1.

Disconnect the intake air duct.


2.

Remove the air cleaner (A).


3.

Disconnect the connector (B).


4.

Remove the harness clamp (C).


7. Brake Fluid (Remove)

1.

Remove the reservoir cap and the brake fluid from the master cylinder reservoir with a syringe.


8. Brake Master Cylinder


Do not spill brake fluid on the vehicle; it may damage the paint. If brake fluid does contact the paint, wash it off immediately with water.


NOTE:

Press the brake pedal several times to deplete the vacuum in the brake booster.

Be careful when handling the master cylinder. Do not hold it at the piston, or the piston may separate from the body. If the piston separates from the body, then the master cylinder must be replaced. Do not reinsert the piston back into the master cylinder body.

Be careful not to damage or bend the brake lines during removal and installation.

After removal, plug the ends of the hoses and the joints to prevent spilling brake fluid.

Make sure not to get any silicone grease on the terminal part of the connectors and switches, especially if you have silicone grease on your hands or gloves.

Disconnect the connector (A).


2.

Remove the reservoir tank (B).



3.

Disconnect the brake lines (A) from the master cylinder (B).


4.

Remove the master cylinder from the brake booster (C).


5.

Remove the O-ring (D) from the master cylinder.

Inspect and note these items:


Before reassembling, check that all parts are free of dirt and other foreign particles.

Do not try to disassemble the master cylinder assembly. Replace the master cylinder assembly with a new part if necessary.

Do not allow dirt or foreign matter to contaminate the brake fluid.

If the reservoir tank hose was disconnected, install the reservoir tank (A) and the reservoir tank hose (B) to the subreservoir (C).


NOTE: Align the ‘‘’’ marks (D) on the reservoir tank and subreservoir with the paint marks (E) on the hose.


1. Brake Master Cylinder


1.

Install the new O-ring (A) to the master cylinder.


NOTE: Coat the O-ring with the Shin-Etsu silicone grease (P/N 08798-9013).


2.

Install the master cylinder (B) to the brake booster (C).


3.

Connect the brake lines (D) to the master cylinder.



4.

Install the reservoir tank (A).


5.

Connect the connector (B).


2. Brake Pedal Height - Inspection (Natural Gas Model)


1.

Pull back the carpet, and find the cutout (A) in the insulation. Measure the pedal height (B) from the left side middle of the pedal pad (C) to the floor (D) without the insulation.


Standard pedal height: 147-157 mm (5.79-6.18 in)


2.

If the pedal height is not as specified, adjust the pedal height.


3. Brake Pedal Free Play - Check


1.

Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).


2.

Inspect the free play (A) at the brake pedal pad (B) by pushing the brake pedal by hand. If the brake pedal free play is out of specification, adjust the brake pedal position switch (C). If the brake pedal free play is insufficient, it may result in brake drag.


Free play: 1-5 mm (0.04-0.20 in)


4. Brake System - Bleeding (Natural Gas Model)

Do not spill brake fluid on the vehicle; it may damage the paint. If brake fluid does contact the paint, wash it off immediately with water.


NOTE:

Do not reuse the drained fluid. Use only new Honda DOT 3 Brake Fluid from an unopened container. Using a non-Honda brake fluid can cause corrosion and shorten the life of the system.

Make sure no dirt or other foreign matter gets in the brake fluid.

The reservoir connected to the master cylinder must be at the MAX (upper) level mark at the start of the bleeding procedure and checked after bleeding each wheel. Add fluid as required.

There are three different methods used for bleeding brake systems. The method shown here is the preferred manual method for removing the air from the system. For pressure or vacuum bleeding, refer to tool manufacturer's instructions included with the tool.

Make sure the brake fluid level in the reservoir tank (A) is at the MAX (upper) level line (B).

Start the bleeding at the driver's side of the front brake system.


NOTE: Bleed the calipers in the sequence shown.

Attach a length of clear drain tube (A) to the bleed screw (B).


4.

Submerge the other end of the drain tube into a clear plastic catch bottle of brake fluid (C).


5.

Have an assistant slowly pump the brake pedal several times then apply steady continuous pressure.


6.

Loosen the bleed screw slowly to bleed the fluid into the plastic catch bottle. The brake pedal will travel toward the floor as the fluid is bled from the system.


7.

When the brake pedal reaches the floor, have the assistant hold the pedal in that position, then tighten the bleed screw. The brake pedal can now be released.


8.

Check and refill the master cylinder reservoir tank to the MAX (upper) level line. Be sure to reinstall the master cylinder reservoir cap.


9.

Repeat steps 5 thru 8 until the brake fluid in the clear drain tube appears fresh and there are no air bubbles in the fluid.


10.

Repeat this procedure for each brake in the bleeding sequence.


5. Brake Drag - Check

1.

Spin the wheels to check for brake drag.


6. Air Cleaner Housing (Natural Gas Model)


1.

Install the air cleaner (A).


2.

Install the harness clamp (B).


3.

Connect the connector (C).


4.

Connect the intake air duct.


7. Kick Panel


1.

Install the kick panel (A).


2.

Install the front door opening seal (B).


8. Front Door Sill Trim - 4-Door

1.

Install the front door sill trim (A).


2.

Install the screw (A).



3.

Install the opener lock cylinder (A).


4.

Install the cap (B).


9. Footrest


1.

For some models: Install the upper clip (A) to the stud bolt (B).


2.

For some models: Install the lower clip (C) to the stud bolt (D), then install the footrest (E).


10. Steering Joint Cover

1.

Install the steering joint cover (A) in the sequence shown.
