Nissan Kicks security systems overview

The Nissan Kicks may be equipped with several security features designed to help protect the vehicle and reduce the risk of unauthorized use.

  • Vehicle security system
  • NISSAN Anti-Theft System
  • NISSAN Vehicle Immobilizer System

Vehicle security system

The vehicle security system in the Nissan Kicks provides both visual and audible alarm warnings if someone opens a door, the hood, or the liftgate while the system is armed. This system is designed to react to unauthorized entry, but it is not a motion-detection system and will not activate simply because the vehicle is moved, shaken, or exposed to vibration.

The system can help discourage vehicle theft, but it cannot prevent theft in every situation. It also cannot fully protect interior or exterior components from being stolen. For this reason, always secure your Nissan Kicks properly, even when leaving it parked for only a short time.

Never leave the keys inside the vehicle, and always lock the Nissan Kicks when it is unattended.

When possible, park in a secure, well-lit area and remain aware of the surroundings before leaving the vehicle.

Additional anti-theft products, such as component locks, identification markings, and vehicle tracking devices, may be available from automotive supply stores and specialty shops. A NISSAN dealer may also offer additional security equipment. It may also be useful to contact your insurance company, as some providers may offer discounts for certain theft-protection features installed on the Nissan Kicks.

How to arm the vehicle security system

1. Close all windows. The system can still be armed even if one or more windows are open.

2. Remove the keys from the vehicle.

3. Close all doors, the hood, and the liftgate. Then lock all doors. The doors can be locked using the Intelligent Key or the door handle request switch, if equipped.

4. Confirm that the Nissan Kicks security indicator light security indicator light remains illuminated for about 30 seconds. At this point, the Nissan Kicks vehicle security system is in the pre-armed phase.

After the pre-armed phase, the vehicle security system automatically changes to the fully armed state. The Nissan Kicks flashing security indicator light security light begins to flash once every three seconds. If any of the following occurs during the pre-armed phase, the system will not arm:

  • Any door is unlocked using the Intelligent Key or the door request switch, if equipped.
  • The ignition switch is placed in the ON position.
  • Even if the driver and/or passengers are inside the Nissan Kicks, the system can activate when all doors, the hood, and the liftgate are locked and the ignition switch is in the LOCK position. When the ignition switch is placed in the ON position, the system is released.

Vehicle security system activation

When the Nissan Kicks vehicle security system is triggered, it provides the following alarm signals:

  • The headlights or turn signal lamps blink, and the horn sounds intermittently in a synchronized pattern.
  • The alarm turns off automatically after a period of time. However, if the vehicle is tampered with again, the alarm can reactivate.

The alarm is activated by:

  • Opening any door, the hood, or the liftgate without using the key or Intelligent Key, even if the door was unlocked from inside by releasing the inside lock knob.

How to stop an activated alarm

The alarm stops only when a door or the liftgate is unlocked with the key fob, or when the Nissan Kicks Intelligent Key unlock button button on the Intelligent Key is pressed.

NISSAN Anti-Theft System (NATS) (if so equipped)

The NISSAN Anti-Theft System is designed to prevent the engine from starting unless a registered NATS key is used.

If the engine does not start with a registered NATS key, the issue may be caused by signal interference from nearby devices, such as:

  • Another NATS key
  • An automated toll road device
  • An automated payment device
  • Other devices that transmit similar electronic signals

Try starting the Nissan Kicks engine using the following procedure:

1. Move any items that may be causing interference away from the NATS key.

2. Leave the ignition switch in the ON position for approximately 5 seconds.

3. Place the ignition switch in the OFF or LOCK position and wait approximately 10 seconds.

4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 one more time.

5. Start the engine.

6. Repeat the procedure above until possible interference sources are eliminated.

If this procedure allows the engine to start, NISSAN recommends keeping the registered NATS key separate from other electronic devices to help avoid future interference.

NISSAN Vehicle Immobilizer System

The NISSAN Vehicle Immobilizer System prevents the engine from starting unless a registered key is used. This adds another layer of protection against unauthorized operation of the Nissan Kicks.

If the engine fails to start with a registered key, the cause may be interference from another registered key, an automated toll road device, an automatic payment device, or another transmitter attached to the same key ring. In that case, restart the engine using the procedure below:

1. Leave the ignition switch in the ON position for approximately 5 seconds.

2. Place the ignition switch in the OFF or LOCK position, then wait approximately 10 seconds.

3. Repeat steps 1 and 2.

4. Restart the engine while keeping the device that may have caused the interference away from the registered key.

If the no-start condition happens again, NISSAN recommends placing the registered key on a separate key ring to reduce the chance of signal interference from other devices.

Nissan Kicks security indicator light on instrument panel

Security indicator light

The security indicator light blinks whenever the ignition switch is placed in the OFF or LOCK position.

This blinking light indicates that the NISSAN Anti-Theft System is operating.

If the NATS system is not functioning correctly, the light may remain on while the ignition switch is in the ON position.

If the security indicator light remains on and/or the Nissan Kicks engine will not start, have the NATS inspected as soon as possible. Bring all registered keys with you. It is recommended that you visit a NISSAN dealer for this service.
