Precautions on seat belt usage Nissan Kicks 2025

Nissan Kicks proper seat belt use and occupant seating position

When the seat belt in the Nissan Kicks is worn correctly, and the occupant sits upright, well back in the seat, with both feet on the floor, the risk of injury or death in a collision can be greatly reduced. A properly adjusted seat belt helps hold the body in the correct position so the restraint system can work as intended. NISSAN strongly recommends that the driver and every passenger buckle up every time the Nissan Kicks is driven, even when the seating position is equipped with a supplemental air bag.

Most U.S. states and Canadian provinces or territories specify that seat belts be worn at all times when a vehicle is being driven.

Nissan Kicks occupants wearing seat belts correctly

WARNING

  • Everyone who drives or rides in the Nissan Kicks should wear a seat belt at all times. Children should ride in the rear seats and must be secured in an appropriate child restraint for their age, height, and weight.

WARNING

  • The seat belt must be adjusted to fit snugly against the body. If it is loose, twisted, or positioned incorrectly, the entire restraint system may be less effective, increasing the chance and severity of injury in a crash. Serious injury or death can occur if a seat belt is not worn properly.

Nissan Kicks correct shoulder belt and lap belt positioning

WARNING

  • Every person in the Nissan Kicks should use a seat belt whenever the vehicle is moving. Children must be properly restrained in the rear seat and, when required, placed in a suitable child restraint system.
  • The seat belt should fit snugly and lie flat against the body. An incorrectly worn belt can reduce the protection of the restraint system and may increase the risk of serious injury or death during an accident.
  • Always route the shoulder belt over your shoulder and across your chest.

Never place the belt behind your back, under your arm, or across your neck.

The belt should remain away from your face and neck, but it must not slip off your shoulder.

  • Position the lap belt as low and snug as possible AROUND THE HIPS, NOT THE WAIST. A lap belt worn too high can increase the risk of internal injuries in a collision.
  • Make sure the seat belt tongue is fully inserted into the correct buckle and securely latched.
  • Do not wear the seat belt inside out or twisted. A twisted belt may not spread crash forces correctly and can reduce protection.
  • Never allow more than one person to use the same seat belt.
  • Do not carry more occupants in the Nissan Kicks than there are available seat belts.
  • If the seat belt warning light stays on continuously or the chime continues while the ignition is ON, all doors are closed, and all seat belts are fastened, the system may have a malfunction. Have the system inspected. It is recommended that you visit a NISSAN dealer for this service.
  • Do not modify the seat belt system. Do not alter the belt, add padding or material, or install devices that change belt routing or tension. Any modification can affect how the seat belt operates and may lead to serious personal injury.
  • If the seat belt pretensioner(s) have activated, they cannot be reused. They must be replaced together with the retractor. It is recommended that you visit a NISSAN dealer for this service.
  • After any collision, all seat belt assemblies, including retractors and mounting hardware, should be inspected.

It is recommended that you visit a NISSAN dealer for this service.

NISSAN recommends replacing all seat belt assemblies that were in use during a collision, unless the collision was minor and the belts show no damage and continue to operate correctly. Seat belt assemblies that were not in use during the collision should also be checked and replaced if damage or improper operation is found.

  • All child restraints and their attaching hardware should be inspected after any collision. Always follow the child restraint manufacturer's inspection and replacement instructions.

Child restraints should be replaced if they are damaged or if their condition is uncertain after an accident.

Correct seat belt use is one of the most important safety habits for Nissan Kicks owners. The air bags are supplemental systems, which means they are designed to work with properly worn seat belts, not replace them.

Seat belt warning light and chime

Nissan Kicks seat belt warning light and chime indicator

The seat belt warning light and chime in the Nissan Kicks remind the driver, front passenger, and rear passengers to fasten their seat belts. A visual and audible alert may operate under the following conditions:

  • The driver's seat belt is not fastened.
  • The front passenger's seat belt is not fastened and the seat is occupied for several seconds after the ignition switch is placed in the ON position.
  • The front passenger's seat belt is not fastened and objects or outside pressure on the front passenger seat cause the seat belt reminder system to classify the seat as occupied.
  • Any rear passenger's seat belt changes from fastened to unfastened.

The following situations may cause the Nissan Kicks seat belt visual and audible alert to operate even when no one is sitting in the front passenger seat:

  • Heavy objects placed on the seat.
  • Someone pushing or pulling on the front passenger seat.
  • An object placed under the front passenger seat.
  • An object placed between the seat cushion and the center console or between the seat cushion and the door.
  • An object hanging from the seat or placed in the seatback pocket.
  • A child restraint or another object pressing against the rear of the seatback.

The rear seat belt reminder may also operate if the rear seat belts are used without passengers in those seating positions. This is normal and depends on how the Nissan Kicks detects seat belt use and passenger presence.

Pregnant women

NISSAN recommends that pregnant women wear seat belts. The belt should fit snugly, with the lap belt positioned as low as possible around the hips, not across the waist or abdomen. The shoulder belt should pass over the shoulder and across the chest. Never place the lap/shoulder belt over the abdominal area. Pregnant Nissan Kicks occupants should contact their doctor for specific recommendations.

Injured persons

NISSAN recommends that injured persons use seat belts whenever possible. Injured occupants should consult their doctor for advice on the safest way to wear the seat belt while riding in the Nissan Kicks.

Three-point type seat belt with retractor Nissan Kicks 2026

WARNING

  • Every person who drives or rides in the Nissan Kicks should wear a seat belt every time the vehicle is in motion.
  • Never ride in the Nissan Kicks with the seatback reclined too far while the vehicle is moving. This can be extremely dangerous because the shoulder belt may not rest properly against your body. In a collision, you could be thrown into the belt and suffer neck injuries or other serious harm.

You could also slide under the lap belt, which may cause severe internal injuries.

  • For the most effective protection while the Nissan Kicks is being driven, keep the seatback upright. Sit well back in the seat, keep both feet on the floor, and make sure the seat belt is adjusted correctly before driving or riding as a passenger.
  • Do not allow children to play with seat belts. Most seating positions in the Nissan Kicks are equipped with Automatic Locking Retractor (ALR) mode seat belts. If a belt becomes wrapped around a child's neck while ALR mode is activated, the belt can tighten and may cause serious injury or death. This can happen even when the vehicle is parked. Unbuckle the belt immediately to release the child. If the belt cannot be unbuckled or is already unbuckled, cut the belt with a suitable tool, such as a knife or scissors, to free the child.

Fastening the seat belts

1. Adjust the seat to the proper driving or riding position. For additional information, see "Seats". A correct seating position helps the Nissan Kicks seat belt fit securely and work as designed.

2. Slowly pull the seat belt from the retractor and insert the tongue into the buckle A until you hear and feel it latch securely.

  • The retractor is designed to lock during a sudden stop or collision.

A slow, steady pulling motion allows the seat belt to extend normally and gives the occupant some freedom of movement in the seat.

  • If the seat belt cannot be pulled from its fully retracted position, pull it firmly and then release it.

After that, pull the belt out smoothly from the retractor.

Nissan Kicks correct lap belt and shoulder belt positioning

3. Position the lap belt portion low and snug across the hips B, as shown. The lap belt should not sit across the waist.

4. Pull the shoulder belt portion toward the retractor to remove extra slack C. Make sure the shoulder belt passes over your shoulder and across your chest, away from your face and neck.

The front passenger seat and the rear seating positions in the Nissan Kicks use three-point seat belts with two operating modes:

  • Emergency Locking Retractor (ELR)
  • Automatic Locking Retractor (ALR)

ELR mode allows the seat belt to extend and retract normally, giving the driver and passengers reasonable freedom of movement while seated. The ELR locks the belt when the Nissan Kicks slows rapidly or during certain impacts.

ALR mode, also called child restraint mode, locks the seat belt so a compatible child restraint can be installed securely.

When ALR mode is activated, the seat belt cannot be extended again until the belt tongue is released from the buckle and the belt fully retracts. Once the seat belt retracts completely, it returns to ELR mode.

ALR mode should be used only when installing a child restraint. During normal seat belt use by an occupant, ALR mode should not be activated. If it is activated, it may create uncomfortable belt tension and may also affect operation of the front passenger air bag system.

WARNING

When fastening the seat belts in the Nissan Kicks, make sure the seatbacks are completely secured in the latched position. If a seatback is not fully locked, passengers may be injured during a sudden stop or collision.

Nissan Kicks seat belt buckle release button

Unfastening the seat belts

To unfasten the seat belt, press the release button on the buckle 1. The seat belt will retract automatically. Guide the belt as it retracts to help prevent it from twisting or striking interior trim.

Checking seat belt operation

The Nissan Kicks seat belt retractors are designed to lock belt movement in two main situations:

  • When the seat belt is pulled quickly from the retractor
  • When the vehicle slows down rapidly

To confirm that the seat belt is operating properly, check it as follows:

  • Grasp the shoulder belt and pull it forward quickly. The retractor should lock and prevent additional belt movement.

If the retractor does not lock during this check, have the system inspected. It is recommended that you visit a NISSAN dealer for this service or for more information about Nissan Kicks seat belt operation.

Nissan Kicks front seat shoulder belt height adjustment anchor

Shoulder belt height adjustment (front seats)

The shoulder belt anchor height should be adjusted to the position that best fits the occupant. For additional information, see "Precautions on seat belt usage". To adjust it, pull out the adjustment button 1 and move the shoulder belt anchor to the desired position 2 so the belt passes over the center of the shoulder. The belt should stay away from the face and neck, but it should not fall off the shoulder. Release the adjustment button to lock the shoulder belt anchor into position.

WARNING

  • After adjusting the shoulder belt anchor, release the adjustment button and try to move the anchor up and down to make sure it is securely fixed.
  • The shoulder belt anchor height must be adjusted to the position that best fits the occupant. If it is not adjusted correctly, the effectiveness of the Nissan Kicks restraint system may be reduced, increasing the chance or severity of injury in an accident.

Nissan Kicks rear seat belt hook for folding rear seats

Seat belt hook

When the rear seat belt is not being used, or when folding down the rear seats in the Nissan Kicks, place the rear seat belts on the seat belt hooks. This helps keep the belts out of the folding area and reduces the chance of pinching or damaging the webbing.

WARNING

Before folding the rear seats back up, make sure the seat belts are not blocking the rear seatback latches. This helps prevent damage to the seat belt webbing and ensures the rear seatbacks can lock properly.

Seat belt extenders

If body size or seating position makes it impossible to correctly fasten the lap/shoulder belt in the Nissan Kicks, a compatible seat belt extender is available for purchase. The extender adds approximately 8 in (200 mm) of length and may be used for either the driver or front passenger seating position.

It is recommended that you visit a NISSAN dealer for assistance when purchasing a seat belt extender to make sure the part is correct for the installed Nissan Kicks seat belt system.

WARNING

  • Only NISSAN seat belt extenders made by the same company that produced the original equipment seat belts should be used with NISSAN seat belts.
  • Adults and children who can properly use the standard seat belt should not use an extender. Unnecessary use of an extender may result in serious personal injury in an accident.
  • Never use a seat belt extender to install a child restraint. If the child restraint is not secured correctly, the child could be seriously injured or killed in a collision or sudden stop.

Seat belt maintenance

  • To clean the Nissan Kicks seat belt webbing, use a mild soap solution or a cleaner recommended for upholstery or carpet. Wipe the belt with a cloth and allow it to dry in the shade. Do not allow the seat belts to retract until they are completely dry.
  • If dirt collects in the shoulder belt guide near the seat belt anchor, the belt may retract slowly. Wipe the shoulder belt guide with a clean, dry cloth.
  • Periodically check that the seat belt and all metal parts, including buckles, tongues, retractors, flexible wires, and anchors, operate correctly. If loose parts, deterioration, cuts, fraying, or other damage to the webbing is found, the entire seat belt assembly should be replaced.

Keeping the seat belts clean, dry, and free of damage helps the Nissan Kicks restraint system remain ready for daily driving and emergency situations.
