WARNING
Do not operate the push-button ignition switch while driving the Nissan Kicks except in an emergency. The engine will stop if the ignition switch is pressed three consecutive times in less than 1.5 seconds, or if the ignition switch is pressed and held for more than 2 seconds. If the engine stops while the vehicle is moving, steering and braking assistance may be reduced, which could lead to a crash and serious injury.
When the ignition switch is pressed without depressing the brake pedal, the switch will illuminate and allow the ignition mode to change without starting the engine.
If the ignition switch is in the LOCK or OFF position, press the center of the ignition switch as follows:
- Press once to change the ignition mode to ON.
- Press twice to return the ignition mode to OFF.
The shift lever can be moved from the P (Park) position only when the ignition switch is in the ON position and the brake pedal is depressed.
If the vehicle battery is discharged, the ignition switch cannot be moved from the LOCK position.
Some operation indicators and warning messages are shown on the vehicle information display to help the driver confirm the current ignition status and system condition.
Operating range
The Intelligent Key functions in the Nissan Kicks can be used only when the Intelligent Key is within the specified operating range.
If the Intelligent Key battery is nearly discharged, or if strong radio waves are present near the vehicle, the operating range of the Intelligent Key system may become smaller and the system may not respond normally.
When the Intelligent Key is inside the operating range, it may be possible for a person who is not carrying the key directly to press the ignition switch and start the engine.
The operating range for starting the engine is inside the vehicle 1.
- The luggage area is not considered part of the main operating range, although the Intelligent Key may sometimes still function from that location.
- If the Intelligent Key is placed on the instrument panel, inside the glove box, in a storage bin, or in a door pocket, the system may not detect it properly.
- If the Intelligent Key is near a door or window outside the Nissan Kicks, the system may still detect it and operate under certain conditions.
Push-button ignition switch positions
LOCK (Normal parking position)
The ignition switch can be locked only in this position.
The ignition switch unlocks when it is pressed to the ON position while the Intelligent Key is being carried inside the operating range.
The ignition switch locks when any door is opened or closed after the ignition has been switched off.
ON (Normal operating position)
This position turns on the ignition system and electrical accessories in the Nissan Kicks. It is the normal operating mode used before starting the engine and when vehicle systems need to be powered.
ON mode includes a battery saver feature that can automatically switch the ignition to the OFF position after a certain period if the Nissan Kicks is not running and the following conditions are met:
- The shift lever is in P (Park).
- The hazard warning lamps are turned off.
- The turn signals are turned off.
The battery saver feature will be canceled if any of the following occur:
- The shift lever is moved out of the P (Park) position.
- The ignition switch position is changed.
- The hazard warning lamps are turned on.
- The turn signals are turned on.
CAUTION
Do not leave the Nissan Kicks with the ignition switch in the ON or AUTO ACC position for an extended period when the engine is not running. Doing so can discharge the battery.
OFF
The ignition switch is in the OFF position when the engine has been stopped using the push-button ignition switch.
AUTO ACC:
Make sure the vehicle is in the P (Park) position and that the Intelligent Key is with you. Then change the ignition switch from the ON position to the OFF position.
The Nissan Kicks will enter AUTO ACC mode. In this mode, the audio system and certain electronic accessories can continue operating for a limited period of time under the following conditions:
- The driver's door has not been opened.
- The permitted operating time has not expired.
Emergency engine shut off
To shut off the engine during an emergency while driving, use one of the following procedures:
- Rapidly press the ignition switch three consecutive times in less than 1.5 seconds, or
- Press and hold the ignition switch for more than 2 seconds.
NISSAN Intelligent Key battery discharge
If the NISSAN Intelligent Key battery is discharged, or if surrounding conditions interfere with Intelligent Key operation, the engine can still be started by using the following procedure.
1. Place the shift lever in the P (Park) position.
2. Firmly depress the foot brake.
3. Touch the ignition switch with the Intelligent Key as shown in the illustration. A chime will sound. After this step, if the ignition switch is pressed without depressing the brake pedal, the ignition mode will change to ON.
4. Within 10 seconds after the chime sounds, press the ignition switch while keeping the brake pedal depressed. The engine of the Nissan Kicks will start.
NOTE:
- When the ignition switch is moved to
the ON position or the engine is started
using the procedure above, the Intelligent
Key battery discharge indicator may appear
in the vehicle information display even
when the Intelligent Key is inside the
vehicle. This does not indicate a malfunction.
To turn off the Intelligent Key battery discharge indicator, touch the ignition switch with the Intelligent Key again.
- If the Intelligent Key battery discharge indicator appears, replace the Intelligent Key battery as soon as possible to restore normal push-button start operation in the Nissan Kicks.
NISSAN Anti-Theft System (NATS)
The NISSAN Anti-Theft System (NATS) installed in the Nissan Kicks is designed to help protect the vehicle against unauthorized use. The system allows the engine to start only when a properly registered NATS key is detected.
If the engine of your Nissan Kicks does not start while using a registered NATS key, signal interference may be preventing proper communication between the key and the vehicle.
- Another NATS key located nearby.
- An electronic toll collection transponder.
- An automatic payment or access device.
- Other electronic equipment transmitting similar radio-frequency signals.
To start the engine, follow this recommended procedure:
1. Remove any devices or objects that could be interfering with the registered NATS key.
2. Leave the ignition switch in the ON position for approximately 5 seconds.
3. Move the ignition switch to the OFF or LOCK position and wait about 10 seconds.
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3.
5. Attempt to start the engine.
6. Repeat the procedure if necessary until all possible sources of interference have been eliminated.
If the engine starts successfully after completing these steps, Nissan recommends keeping the registered NATS key separate from electronic devices and additional keys that could create interference.
NISSAN Vehicle Immobilizer System
The NISSAN Vehicle Immobilizer System in the Nissan Kicks provides an additional layer of security by preventing engine operation unless a correctly registered key is recognized by the vehicle.
If the engine cannot be started with a registered key, interference may be caused by another registered key, an automated toll collection device, an electronic payment tag, or similar equipment attached to the same key ring.
To restore normal operation, perform the following procedure:
1. Leave the ignition switch in the ON position for approximately 5 seconds.
2. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF or LOCK position and wait approximately 10 seconds.
3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 once more.
4. Restart the engine while keeping the suspected interfering device away from the registered key.
If the no-start condition occurs again, it is recommended that the registered Nissan Kicks key be carried on a separate key ring to minimize interference from other electronic devices.
Before starting the engine
Before driving your Nissan Kicks, take a few moments to perform a basic safety and vehicle condition check. These simple inspections can improve reliability, safety, and driving comfort.
- Make sure the area around the vehicle is completely clear of obstacles, people, and animals.
- Check fluid levels, including engine oil, engine coolant, brake fluid, and windshield washer fluid. These inspections should be performed regularly and especially during refueling stops.
- Verify that all windows, mirrors, cameras, and exterior lighting lenses are clean and provide clear visibility.
- Visually inspect all tires for signs of wear, cuts, damage, or unusual deformation. Confirm that tire pressures meet the recommended specifications for the Nissan Kicks.
- Ensure all doors are securely locked before driving.
- Adjust the driver's seat and properly position the head restraints for maximum comfort and protection.
- Adjust both the interior and exterior mirrors to provide the best possible field of view.
- Fasten your seat belt and ensure every passenger in the Nissan Kicks is properly restrained before the vehicle begins moving.
- When the ignition switch is placed in the ON position, confirm that the warning and indicator lights illuminate correctly as part of the system self-check.
Additional note: Regular inspection of keys, batteries, tires, and essential vehicle systems helps maintain dependable operation of the Nissan Kicks and can prevent unexpected starting or driving issues. Keeping electronic devices separated from the Intelligent Key can also improve system reliability.
For optimal security and convenience, always keep your registered Nissan Kicks key away from electronic devices that may generate radio interference. Performing a quick pre-drive inspection can significantly improve safety and vehicle reliability.
