WARNING
- Make sure the parking brake is fully released before driving the Nissan Kicks. Driving with the parking brake applied can cause brake overheating, reduced braking performance, brake damage, and may lead to an accident.
- Do not release the parking brake from outside the vehicle.
- Do not use the shift lever as a substitute for the parking brake. When parking, always confirm that the parking brake is fully applied.
- To help reduce the risk of injury or death from unintended vehicle operation or system activation, do not leave children, people who require assistance, or pets unattended inside your Nissan Kicks. In warm weather, the temperature inside a closed vehicle can rise quickly and may create a serious risk of injury or death for people and animals.
Electronic parking brake (switch type)
The electronic parking brake in the Nissan Kicks can be applied or released automatically under certain conditions, or manually by using the parking brake switch.
Automatic operation
Under the following conditions, the electronic parking brake will be applied automatically and the braking force from the automatic brake hold function will be released:
- The automatic brake hold function has been applying braking force for 3 minutes or longer.
- The shift lever is in the P (Park) position.
- The driver's seat belt is unfastened.
- The ignition switch is placed in the OFF position.
- The parking brake is applied manually.
- A malfunction occurs in the automatic brake hold function.
The electronic parking brake releases automatically when the Nissan Kicks begins to move and the accelerator pedal is pressed while the driver's seat belt is fastened.
WARNING
- When the automatic brake hold function is active, the electronic parking brake will not be applied automatically if the engine stops without using the ignition switch, such as during engine stalling.
- Before leaving the Nissan Kicks, move the shift lever to the P (Park) position and confirm that the electronic parking brake warning light is illuminated. This confirms that the electronic parking brake is applied. The warning light may remain on for a short period after the driver's door is locked.
CAUTION
When parking in temperatures below 32ºF (0ºC), the parking brake may freeze in the applied position and become difficult to release.
For safer parking in freezing conditions, place the shift lever in the P (Park) position and securely block the wheels.
NOTE:
- To keep the electronic parking brake released after the engine is turned off, place the ignition switch in the OFF position, depress the brake pedal, and push down the parking brake switch before opening the driver's door.
- If a malfunction occurs in the electronic parking brake system, such as after a battery discharge, it is recommended that you visit a NISSAN dealer.
- Under the following conditions, the
parking brake will automatically apply
and the braking force from the automatic
brake hold function will be released:
- The automatic brake hold function has held the vehicle for 3 minutes or longer.
- The shift lever is in the P (Park) position.
- The driver's seat belt is unfastened.
- The ignition switch is placed in the OFF position.
- The parking brake is applied manually.
- A malfunction occurs in the automatic brake hold function.
Manual operation
The electronic parking brake will not be applied automatically if the engine stops without the ignition switch being used, for example, if the engine stalls. In this situation, the driver must apply the parking brake manually.
To apply: Pull the switch up 1. The indicator light A will illuminate.
To release: With the ignition switch in the ON position, depress the brake pedal and push the switch down 2. The indicator light A will turn off.
Before driving the Nissan Kicks, make sure the electronic parking brake indicator light (
or
PARK)
goes out.
NOTE:
- A buzzer will sound if the Nissan Kicks is driven without first releasing the parking brake.
- When the electronic parking brake is applied or released, an operating sound may be heard from the lower area of the rear seat. This is normal and does not indicate a malfunction.
- If the electronic parking brake is applied
and released repeatedly within a short
period, the system may temporarily stop
operating to prevent overheating.
If this happens, wait approximately 1 minute, then operate the electronic parking brake switch again.
- If the electronic parking brake must be applied while driving in an emergency, pull up and hold the parking brake switch. When the switch is released, the parking brake will also be released.
- When the electronic parking brake switch is pulled up while driving, the parking brake is applied and a chime sounds. The electronic parking brake indicator light in the meter and on the parking brake switch will illuminate. This does not indicate a malfunction. The indicator lights turn off when the parking brake is released.
- When the electronic parking brake switch is pulled up while the ignition switch is in the OFF or AUTO ACC position, the switch indicator light may remain illuminated for a short period.
