Technical ReferenceSpecifications, procedures and limits

If the battery of your Nissan Kicks becomes discharged, the engine can be started using a booster battery. Carefully follow the procedures and safety precautions below to help prevent personal injury and avoid damage to the vehicle's electrical system.

WARNING

  • Improper jump-starting procedures can cause a battery explosion, which may result in severe injury, death, or significant damage to your Nissan Kicks.
  • Hydrogen gas is continuously generated around vehicle batteries.

Keep sparks, open flames, cigarettes, and any ignition sources well away from the battery area at all times.

  • Do not allow battery electrolyte to come into contact with your eyes, skin, clothing, or painted vehicle surfaces. Battery fluid contains corrosive sulfuric acid that can cause serious burns. If contact occurs, immediately flush the affected area thoroughly with clean water.
  • Keep batteries and battery-related components out of the reach of children.
  • The booster battery must be a 12-volt battery. Using a battery with an incorrect voltage rating may damage the electrical systems of the Nissan Kicks.
  • Whenever working around a battery, wear appropriate eye protection such as safety goggles or industrial safety glasses. Remove rings, watches, bracelets, and other metal jewelry before beginning the procedure. Never lean directly over the battery during jump starting.
  • Never attempt to jump start a frozen battery. A frozen battery can rupture or explode, causing serious injury.
  • The electric engine cooling fan may activate automatically without warning, even when the engine is off and the ignition switch is in the OFF position. Keep hands, clothing, tools, and other objects clear of moving components.

WARNING

Always follow the jump-starting sequence exactly as described below.

Failure to observe the correct procedure may damage the charging system, electrical components, or result in personal injury.

1. If the booster battery is installed in another vehicle, position the two vehicles so that the batteries are as close as practical to one another.

Do not allow the vehicles to come into contact with each other.

2. Apply the parking brake firmly. Move the shift lever to the P (Park) position. Turn off all unnecessary electrical accessories, including lights, climate control systems, audio equipment, and other power-consuming devices.

3. Place the ignition switch in the LOCK or OFF position.

4. Connect the jumper cables in the order shown in the illustration ( A , B , C , D ).

CAUTION

  • Always connect the positive (+) terminal to the positive (+) terminal and connect the negative (−) cable to a suitable vehicle body ground, such as a strut mounting bolt or engine lifting bracket. Never connect the negative cable directly to the discharged battery.
  • Ensure that the jumper cables are routed safely away from moving engine components and that the cable clamps do not touch each other or any unintended metal surfaces.

5. Start the engine of the booster vehicle and allow it to run for several minutes to help charge the discharged battery.

6. Maintain the booster vehicle engine speed at approximately 2,000 rpm, then attempt to start the engine of the Nissan Kicks with the discharged battery.

CAUTION

Do not operate the starter motor continuously for more than 10 seconds at a time. If the engine does not start immediately, place the ignition switch in the OFF position and wait 3 to 4 seconds before making another attempt.

7. Once the engine starts successfully, carefully disconnect the jumper cables in reverse order. Remove the negative cable first, followed by the positive cable.

Push Starting

CAUTION

  • Do not attempt to push start the Nissan Kicks. Doing so may damage the three-way catalytic converter and other drivetrain components.
  • Nissan Kicks models equipped with a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) cannot be push-started or tow-started. Attempting either procedure may result in serious transmission damage and costly repairs.
